Description

This dense swamp is from Florida's Big Cypress National Preserve, near the Everglades. What I love most about this landscape is the floral biodiversity. There is an insane variety and concentration of animals, like birds, fish, and alligators, but its the variety of plants that captivates me most. In just the foreground of this small scene, there are multiple bald cypresses, each of whose buttressed trunk plays host to myriad epiphytes: several types of fern, bromeliads, air plants, and orchids. And also a young strangler fig that, if it survives to maturity, will one day kill the cypresses and change this scene entirely.
